6 Word Memoirs

What literary techniques do these six word memoirs all have in common? Do they tell a story? Are they nonsense? Pointless to write?

  1. Okay this is so brilliant but also so typical of our generation. I was reading this and i said to myself "we are a generation of few words". Im always wondering how will we be remembered. So a six word memoir seemed fitting. The memoirs are so mysterious because you think they are one thing but you'll never really know what the truth is. These are definitely not pointless at all. This kind of reminded me of story corps because people telling their own stories. My favorite is the one that says "im my mother and im fine". I would love to do one of these.

  2. I thought this was pretty cool. As I was reading, I couldn't help but think what i would want those six words to be. Six words is so limiting, but i realized from this reading, you can really say a lot. I learned from reading the memoirs that the six words can be random to someone else, but can be so personal and meaningful to the writer.

  3. I think what Shinelle said is really interesting, and I really liked her short story. While these are really neat and are fun to ponder the meaning of, it does remind me that when it comes to writing in our current generation, it's so simplified. I feel as if writing has really died out in comparison to centuries ago.
But these stories are a reminder of the power of words, and how so much meaning can be packed into just six of them.

  4. I think that the idea of a six word memoir is a very unique idea. I think that it is something that needs to be more expressed in writing. I like how when someone is reading it, you can kind of make it your own story in a way. For example, when the article talked about how when they found out who the actual people were that were writing the memoirs, they weren't anything that they expected. When you only read six words of a short story, then you can put your own twist on certain things; such as the age, the gender, and the reason for writing them. Overall I liked reading some of them because they are really meaningful but they are also very short and easy to read.

  5. Although they may be made up of six words they do sort of tell a story or try to make a point. I liked reading them because, it was a quick, easy read and they had meanings behind them. I also like these memoirs because, you can interpret them for yourself and make what you want of them. To think you can tell a story or get a point across in six words is crazy.

  6. I enjoyed how greatly it effected all of the people how participated and actually made it worth their own while. I feel that this technique is hard, I couldn't tell a story in only 6 words

  7. I actually really liked this literary piece because of how six words can mean so much. I believe I can tell a story about myself in six words. it would be "hard work, struggle. poverty. fun. happy."

  8. That's definitely a cool idea! The website is creative in this moment. People wrote down their six words to memorize their own experiences. Every single one sentence shows different stories. I like the one "Spring Break? What spring? What break?" see those six words could be reconstructed in questions. I like it because this spring break is pretty freezing and quick.

  9. I enjoyed this reading a lot because it was so different from the normal story or poem. It was interesting because a story was told in only six words. The thing that all the memoirs have in common is the fact that they talk about something important to the speaker. Some of them are vague and people can interpret them in different ways, others are very specific. I don't think they are pointless to write because they all have a meaning behind them. It is hard to express yourself in only six words, but it is a good challenge!

  10. The memoirs are another way of expressing your thoughts and feelings to the world. Our generation today is in the habit of shortening language so that we could get the message across as quick and simply as possible. I think that that's the point of these memoirs, get the point across and do it quickly.

  11. In my opinion, its limitations make it that more exciting yet challenging. I mean think about it, writing a story about you or your life in six words. You can say so much with so few words. I really enjoyed some of them and while some where simple and in plain English, others evoked thought. To really point out any literary techniques would be difficult. I guess I could say that they each had a story to tell, some stood out at your right away and others took some time to process. This whole concept of being able to tell a story to me was just so interesting, and I think all the contributors in the reading did just a phenomenal job at best.
